Monte Cofano separates Cornino and Custonaci from the gulf facing Castelluzzo and Macari. The mountain, coastline and towers offer different ways to explore the area.
Cornino, Frassino and the tuna-fishing coast
Choose your starting side: Cornino and Frassino are landmarks on the Custonaci side, while Tonnara di Cofano faces the other side of the headland. Locate them on the map before navigating; a generic reserve search may lead far from your intended walk.
Towers, shoreline and maritime heritage
Torre di San Giovanni and Tonnara di Cofano are landmarks in the headland’s history. Coastal walks reveal the meeting of limestone walls and sea. Do not assume buildings are open: walking through the landscape and entering a historic structure are separate activities.
Coastal walking and summit routes
Height alone does not describe route difficulty. Coastal circuits and summit ascents have different demands. Choose open sections suited to your experience and conditions, and check the manager’s notices before planning a complete loop.
Cycling and swimming nearby
Custonaci’s cycling park offers routes around the reserve, not permission to cycle inside it. For a swim, consider Cornino or the coves towards Castelluzzo. Plan beach and trail access separately.
Useful places on the map
Find your bearings: west coast, village and Zingaro
Macari and Castelluzzo face west towards the Gulf of Monte Cofano. San Vito’s beach fronts the village; Tonnara del Secco and Zingaro lie on the other side of the peninsula.
